Multilateral Cooperation towards Development

The Portuguese cooperation in the Justice area is also pursued within the framework of multilateral bodies. In this scope, it should be highlighted:

  • The Conference of the Ministers of Justice of the Portuguese Speaking Countries (CMJPLOP)

This Conference, established in 1992, purports to encourage the development of cooperation relationships between the several Member States in the Justice scope.

Portugal, which hosted the XIII Conference that took place in 29 and 30 of May 2013, took over the presidency of this important Forum. This Conference had the “International Protection of Children within the CPLP Scope” as main theme and in this context the Lisbon Declaration on Common Measures regarding the Prevention and the Combat against Trafficking in Human Beings and the Lisbon Declaration on Common Measures regarding the Prevention and the Fight against Corruption of Public Officials in International Business Transactions were approved.

In the scope of CMJPLOP there are 4 Work Commissions that work on priority subjects, such as:

  • The Work Commission related to the Prevention and Combat of Trafficking in Human Beings;
  • The Work Commission related to the Prevention and Fight against Corruption in International Business Transactions;
  • The Work Commission on the International Protection of Children within the CPLP scope;
  • The Work Commission on the drafting of a Manual designed to put into practice the Convention on the Transfer of Sentenced Persons among the Member States of the Portuguese Speaking Countries
